You open your mail and you see a credit card statement with a balanced owed in excess of your total monthly income or for that fact it could be your total annual income! Oh NO! What is going on??? This isn’t happening to me or worse yet, this isn’t happening AGAIN!
Very scary thought… All the same, this does, in fact, happen to people each and every day and the worst part about it is that they do not know about it until that statement comes in and the monies have already been spent.
I had a very similar situation once where I did, in fact, apply for the card and they did, in fact, have my signature on the application (Yes, this is back in the old days) but I had neglected to correct the mailing address of the application that was mailed to my Mother’s home and so she got the new credit card and proceeded to use it until there was no more balance and because all the statements were going to her house, she even paid on it for a few months before I started getting collection calls! Oh, the woes we have seen…
Back to our story though of opening that shocking statement and seeing a balance due…a whopping huge balance! This is identity fraud. Someone uses your information to gain access to credit and in fact stole your credit line money too.
Why is this coming up in my mind again? Because this past Saturday, I woke up to an email alert and a text alert stating that credit had been applied for in my name and they were confirming whether it was me or not originating the request. I immediately texted back “N” for “NO” which activated an investigation and freeze on the transaction. Whew…dodged another bullet! Plus…I was hosting a party that afternoon and really did not have time to deal with such nonsense!
A feeling of peace and security came over me when I contacted my LifeLock representative and learned that they would handle it and get back to me in a few days.
Back to cleaning house and cooking for a party in my now so perfect world, but…believe me, when I say it hasn’t always been like that and that I have gone through my share of freaked out moments because I have had my credit tapped into and depleted in the past, I have been included in these cyber-security breaches and I now have had my identity stolen!
So what’s the “Cyber Trick”?
It’s taking the ACTION now to protect yourself in the future and prevent your world from being turned upside down when something happens to you.
