First off…they are NOT a good blend! Of course that is stating the obvious but it’s TAX SEASON BABY!
I am hoping for most of you reading this, you have already filed your tax returns by now and if you are one of the lucky ones that have and hopefully received a refund, then YAY for you! Filing your taxes quickly is the best way to avoid income tax fraud. Believe it or not, thieves’ filing for your tax refunds before you have a chance to do so is one of the fastest growing forms of identity theft. We work all year long for this moment and if you are one of the unfortunate to have to deal with a fraud case…it could ruin the rest of this year or more!
In 2016, the IRS identified $4 Billion (Yes that is Billion with a “B”) in suspected ID theft from tax refund fraud and you know as well as I do that the thieves are always figuring new ways of taking our money.¹
The IRS has put together some great tips with warning signs and steps for victims.
The fact that they have put together a guide is reason enough for the rest of us to take note and take action so that we do not become part of the statistics!
So what is the best ACTION? By far taking steps to prevent identity theft in every aspect of our lives. I don’t know about you but that alone can be very overwhelming and cumbersomeness. Yes, we shred or burn our personal papers but wait…I have to keep it for the designated number of years for the IRS so that is still an issue. I’m careful and all, and expect everyone else to be with my information too, however, breaches do happen and I myself have disputed thousands of dollars of charges on my cards because of it. So how do we sleep at night? Make sure to protect yourself by having someone there to work on your behalf.
